Preventive Maintenance

This section of maintenance world is dedicated to preventive maintenance(PM). We have decided to define preventive maintenance as the combination of all actions in a plant to prevent failures and detect failures early. The two parts of preventive maintenance is 1. condition monitoring (actions that detect failures) and 2. maintenance prevention (actions that prevent failures).

Examples of condition monitoring are all inspections: look, listen, feel, smell, vibration analysis, Amp readings, infrared, ultrasonics, oil analysis and much more.

Examples of maintenance prevention are: lubrication, alignment, balancing, operating procedures, cleaning, adjustment, and much more. Condition Monitoring is often looked upon as mostly being vibration analysis.

In our experience most equipment failures are found with condition monitoring techniques such as look and listen. Simple inspections of equipment are often underestimated when working with condition monitoring.

Visit our main sponsors to view examples of interesting condition monitoring and preventive maintenance books as well as preventive maintenance consulting. Feel free to brows all condition monitoring articles and PM articles.
